What was your inspiration?

The Craftsy Block of the Month for April 2012.

What are you most proud of?

That I finally got around to tackling the block. I was put off by the hand-piecing and number of hexigon pieces in the block, but once I settled on a plan of action, it was surprisingly easy and enjoyable to see the project come together.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Don't be intimidated by the English paper-piecing method. I found it to be very relaxing and, much to my surprise, enjoyed the quiet time.

My advice would be to create two plastic templates for each size of hexagon required. One template for the finished size, as provided in the instructions and one that is 1/4" larger for cutting out the hexagon from the fabric. This would have saved me so much time, had I thought of this earlier!

I basted each hexagon at each of its six corners. After attaching the hexagons into a strip, I cut the basting threads in the center of two adjacent corners. Removing these shorter threads was easier than trying to remove the entire basting thread at once and reduced the chance of distorting the shape.
