Couture dress

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
The Couture Dress »

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Classic

Materials

Wool plaid, underlined with silk organza and lined with taffeta lining

What was your inspiration?

I hope to make my daughter's wedding dress and felt that I needed to improve my sewing abilities, especially as I will be using a combination of patterns to make her dress. The course has given me the confidence to do this, and not be afraid of just going ahead and doing it.

What are you most proud of?

The fact that after 40 years of sewing my own clothes, I have discovered that I am short in the neck to waist back measurement, and now I can finally fix the problem of the zippers being wrinkly down my back. Very proud of all that hand sewing as well.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Give yourself plenty of time!

For anyone from NZ, Sentoza Fabrics in Auckland sell white silk organza at a reasonable price.

Sentosa fabrics are silk wholesalers based near Eden Park. Google them, sorry I can't give you more details as I am away on holiday and have limited Internet. I gave more details somewhere on the couture dress site. Downstairs from them is Frost Fabrics which sell Dupion silk at very good prices if you are interested in the sewing with silks class.

I would never have thought of a jumper for this pattern, but definitely a great idea. Your advice about "give yourself plenty of time" is so right, but your results show that it was worth it! Well Done!

Great job on this dress. I always avoid plaid because it looks so hard (even after this class), but you sewed it beautifully.

Your dress looks lovely and it fits you beautifully. Thanks for the advice about the NZ silk supplier, their price is great. I paid twice as much for mine from a retailer in Wellington

Love this!! I've been wanting to make a jumper and I think you've convinced me to get started on one. Super fit, cute fabric.

I never would have thought of a jumper. Wonderful idea and it looks great on you, nice fit and matching of the plaid.

Thank you for all your kind comments. The plaid wasn't a proper square like I thought when I bought it, so it caused quite a few problems with matching. The photo was taken several weeks ago when the weather was still cool, but we are now going into spring /summer, so I think I will make it up again with the flared skirt in a cotton fabric. Thanks Susan for introducing me to the joys of silk organza.

What a great idea, making the dress into a jumper. And your work is beautiful I might have to make another dress, that is once I get the first one done.

Excellent work matching the plaid. This makes a great fall or winter (or spring in southern hemisphere?) jumper. I hadn't thought of that until now, but will keep it in mind for the next time I take out this pattern. ... I agree,... the hand sewing is a delight.
