This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
The Couture Dress »

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Romantic, Cute, Casual

Materials

Cotton fashion fabric and cotton muslin lining

What was your inspiration?

Summer! I wanted something pretty and smart casual to wear to lunches or for a day out.

What are you most proud of?

I'm most proud of the fit, the sleeve and the lace trim.
I have always made a garment first with the fashion fabric. This was my first time making a muslin toile and it made a HUGE difference to the fit. I was able to adjust the size on the toile first then have a perfect fitting dress.
The lace trim adds a new dimension and gives it a feminine finish.
The sleeve is a flounce sleeve that I took from another pattern. I wanted to cover the top of my shoulders, without having a full cap sleeve which I find too restrictive.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Definitely raise the back as Susan advises to do. I didn't with this dress and the sleeves fall down. I now have the added dilemma of trying to figure out what to add to keep the shoulders up!
I am making this dress again with a straight skirt and I have raised the back, which fits much better and the shoulders don't fall down.

So did you put in an underlining? If so, what did you use? Or is it just the cotton fabric and muslin lining?

No I didn't use underlining, just a fine cotton muslin lining. The dress is quite heavy because of the skirt so I didn't want lining and underlining.

Okay thank you. I am in Jakarta and do not want something really heavy. I also have no idea where I would find silk organza or china silk here!

I couldn't find silk organiza here in Stockholm either. I'm originally from Sydney so I also didn't want anything too heavy. I'm also a litle bit impatient and really coudn't be bothered doing all those layers!

Lovely! I love the little black belt. I just signed up for this class a couple of days ago and am waiting for the pattern. You are a great inspiration and I can't wait to try this out.

Definitely a winner. Using the belt only on the lower edge of the midriff nicely elongates the line of the bodice, and I agree with the commenter who says it looks like a million. Thanks for the inspiration!

I am absolutely speechless at the amount of comments I have received for this dress..... I thank you all from the bottom of my heart! I did not expect to have so many positive words of encouragement. It really does make a girl feel proud of what she's done. THANK YOU! :-)

Very nice and looks great on you. To "hold up" the shoulders/sleeves, consider getting some of the little bra snap thingies and tack them onto your dress.
