freezer paper technique helps make those curves nice and smooth

This is awsome for only your second applique project. Did you find it hard to do? Did you take a class? Or did you teach yourself? I have yet to try an applique project. I am thinking of doing a dresden plate flower wall hangin for my new expected Great granddaughter in April. Hopefully it will match her rag quilt that I am making for her. I will post it when I am finished making it. Next couple of weeks I hope. She will live in Edomton AB, Canada when she is born.
