Instructions

This is EASY!

Cut your outside (I used batik) and inside (white) fabric to 10" x however long you want. (Plan on 1" per 2 pencils plus 2 inches). Mark 2 elastic strips every 1 inch. Pin elastic to white fabric matching up the 1 inch marks so you have about 2 " between each strip. Fuse fleece to batik backing and sandwich the 3 layers together. Machine stitch down each line so that ...

When I saw how Lola Jenkins organized her colored pencils, I wanted to do the same for mine.

What are you most proud of?

I didn't need a pattern -- just did it!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Design your pencil roll to fit the number of pencils you have but leave room for more!

Carol Anne, I adore this! I just got my 150 Prismacolor Pencil set in the mail today for Lola's Thread Art class. I'm simply not a fan of the bulky tin they came in. Luckily, I came across Lola's recommendation to check out this project of yours - and I love it! I actually made a roll very similar to this to give to my sisters for Christmas as a travel makeup/brush holder. I added a zippered pocket at one end, and a rickrack trim. Where oh where did you find the fabulous fabric you used in the picture above? I'm in love! :)

I love, love, love this! It would also be so functional for gons of other things..... Traveling makeup brushes, crochet hooks, knitting needles, jewelrymaking tools.... Heck, you could even squirrel away a setting of eating utensils for the travel trailor -- something to keep the dust off. Fabulous!

I am totally in love. Just made a pencil roll and my colored pencils are happy in their new home. Only problem is I need more space, I grossly underestimated my pencil stash. But, I know just what to do. Thanks for sharing. Oh, this project was a great test run for the rat tail binding I've yet to do on my stitch and slash project. It worked beautifully.

I use fusible fleece because it's easy and I have lots in my stash but you can use regular batting too. You don't really need the glue because this piece is so small!

This is wonderful! It's beautiful, practical, easy, fast... functional... everything I like in a sewing project. It would make great gifts! Oh and for those with too many seam rippers... send them my way (mine disappear)

Very nice and a great idea. I have one for my paint brushes but it is made with the fabric on the inside as well but only half way up so the tops of the brushes show and stitched from top to bottom in rows to hold the brushes. Another thought for you creative people that use brushes as well. Cheers Donna

So beautiful! I like the elastic strip idea a lot. I made a pencil roll for my niece a while back but the inside had individual pockets. Your version is much easier to sew and more flexible (literally!).

Carol Anne, this is a clever project for all levels of sewing enthusiasts. I love the function--the pencil roll is great for traveling, storing, and organizing. Your choice of colorful fabrics are dazzling! Would this sew well using oil cloth for studio brushes?
Carol Ann Waugh on craftsy.com

Oil cloth would even be better than the fabrics I chose since it would wouldn't take any of the color from the pencils. Great improvement!

Very nice! I love the way the thread on the edge changes color and matches so well with the fabric!

What a neat idea - and so much prettier than the black tub and the boxes that I keep my pencils in! Thank you for sharing!

I, too, am expecting my Prismacolor pencils in a few days. Carol Ann, you don't mind if I do this before I complete my Stitch Bible? I have the cover done, but ran into problems with the stitches (I have a Viking Topazx 20), and so set it aside. I'll grab that project folder and see if it makes more sense to me now. Love your creativity, and your teaching style. I am glad that you and Lola have a mutual admiration society going, and I want to join!
