Coin Pouch (Quilt Plus) »

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Accessory

For: Women

Style: Retro / Vintage, Cute, Whimsical

Materials

Metal Frame, Cotton Fabric, and Batting

What was your inspiration?

I saw this pattern and examples at a quilt show and they were just too cute to pass up. So I got the pattern, a frame, some fabric and batting all at the quilt show...went back to the hotel room and hand sewed my first one. (The one in the center back) then there was no stopping me!

What are you most proud of?

That other people actually like them! I must be doing something right. :)

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Have patience sewing the frame to the 'pouch' you're blind pushing the needle through to the front. The front to back is easy peasy! - I started using 'invisible thread' too - that makes it a little more challenging, but less noticeable and stronger!

FYI - This particular pattern makes three different Coin Pouches - 2 Small (a round and a rectangular frame) and a little larger one (round frame only)

!!!PURCHASING INFORMATION HERE!!!
Once you are on the http://www.quiltplus.net website:
go to Online Store, and Search for A024. This is the pattern I used.
The frames are numbered: Rectangular shape: 50 (500), Round shape: 60 (600) & Round shape: 61 (610) (keychain version is in parents)
You can also call and order them from Red Hen Fabrics. They also carry the handles.

Do you have any tips on the stitching. I love using these clasps but I hate stitching. I worked on one tonight and put it aside because I hate stitching. I see that you stitch in and out. I always stitch diagonally and under as that is what the instruction video said. Your purses are darling

These are really nice! In your photo above, you have the larger purse with chain, which pattern number is that? I'd like to try making one. Also, what is included? Just the frame or pattern and frame? I too found their site difficult to navigate. Thanks for your inspiration.

These are called Thread Tweezers and they are made by Dritz. I have several sewing machines and I keep a little tool box with each one for feet and accessories--I have a pair of these tweezers in every box to include my actual sewing kit that I always have out. They are invaluable. I also have a pair in my serger box--they make threading (and re-threading and re-threading) lower loopers much easier. I love them!

tjwindsor on craftsy.com

You'll need pieces of fabric each around 5" square ... I usually buy an 1/8 yard or a fat quarter, but you can see scraps will work, too. even charm packs.

The coin purses are beatiful. Love the fabric and the handles. Are the handles hard to work with? I think I will have to look into gettting the pattern.
tjwindsor on craftsy.com
Jun 23, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
its not too hard as long as you start in the middle and work your way down one side of the handle, then the other side. Its also good to have a tool with a thin flat edge to help poke the fabric up into the handles. I'll post a couple in progress pictures tomorrow so you get the idea.

Here is the actual link to the coin pouch pattern that I used: http://www.quiltplus.net/index.php?option=com_wrapper&view=wrapper&Itemid=3 This you are in Georgia its also available at Red Hen Fabrics. They also carry the handles. This particular pattern will make two different size pouches a small one (shown) and one a little larger (I'll post a picture shortly). The handles used for the smaller one are #50 (#500 has a keychain attached) this is a square shape and #61 (#610 has a keychain attached).
