What was your inspiration?
My inspiration was my threads magazines. I have a large stack of them that I have collected over the years and never really did much with them until now. I am going through my magazines (old ones first) and taking a project or idea out of each book and making them new again. This coat was inspired from the November 2000 issue. The welt pockets (although I changed them a bit) The pieced look and the quilting were ideas from that issue.
What are you most proud of?
My hood.... I almost didn't make one but at the last minute I whipped one up (had never made one before) and I am sooooo glad I did. It will keep me warm this winter!!
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
It's a lot of work and heavy, so be prepared :)
Each of the coat's pieces were quilted separately by machine and then joined together. The lining was sewn separately and then inserted inside the coat and the bottom lining was hemmed by hand to the coat.
The back piece was strip pieced together first in straight strips and then I put the pattern on top of it to cut it out. Then it was sewn to the side back. The hood and sleeves were not quilted. Everything is insulated with a good quality batting sewn together as one piece and quilted.
If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask!!
