Quilting: Coasters

Coasters

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Craftsy Block of the Month 2012 »

Instructions

Amy's Stitchery Dickory Dock website gave me the sample for this coaster. I wanted to try the square-up template to make sure the half-square triangles were accurate since they were so tiny. The half-square triangle blocks measured 1-1/2 inch.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Home

Style: Cute, Casual

Materials

Triangle leftovers from my Hometown quilt, walking foot with edge-stitching presser foot, Quilt-in-a-Day triangle square-up template

What was your inspiration?

Amy's Stitchery Dickory Dock website for use of tiny leftover scraps.

What are you most proud of?

Even though the coasters were so small, most of the points matched up.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Everyone has scraps and making something out of them is worth the hassle of saving them.

Well, I am a pack rat . . . you really don't need a pattern. These were cuttings leftover from flying geese blocks. All I did was make half-square triangle blocks, trim them all to the same size, and sew together however big you want the coaster to be. Then I just cut batting and backing the same size as the front, sewed together right sides together, leaving a space on one edge so I could turn the coaster right side out. Then I sewed up the opening and did stitching on the coaster. There's really no right or wrong way. Good luck!

Indeed very delightful results from pieces most people toss away. I saved mine, and will try this later this fall once I get my sewing room set up again.

It is fun making something nice and useful instead of tossing scraps away.

LOVE THESE! Wonder if there is time to get the 'crumbs' out of my garbage... just did a big clean up and now I am feeling guilty... oh well there will always be more! Thanks for the inspiration! :)

Thank you. Nancy, did you notice that the scraps I used were the same fabric line as is in your block. It's Hometown and I also made a quilt out of it which is where these scraps came from.

Thank you. I love making smaller items because they are great gifts, practice for me, and a use for 'crumbs' that I would have previously discarded. I like reading your comments because it is fun seeing your words that mean the same compared to what we're used to.

Thank you. Now that I've made these once, I think I'll try for a mug rug size next time.
