I baked my cake and covered the cake in black fondant. I used a rolling pin and crisco to put rolled fondant on my cake. I cut white pieces out and placed them on the cake to look like stripes. I used a pearl mold for the red pearls on the bottom border of the cake. I used a gumpaste shoe template to make the shoe on the top of the cake. I found the template on cakecentral.com. I made it a few days a head of time to it could dry. I used edible glitter to pu on the shoe and black fondant for the bow. White fondant is put in the inside of the shoe.
What was your inspiration?
I found a similiar cake on flickr.com. I had a customer who wanted a red shoe cake and I found a picture and copied the cake by just looking at it. I put a little more glitter on my shoe because the customer wanted it really shiny and glittery. :)
What are you most proud of?
Of course the shoe! :) But, it all came together nicely and the customer loved it! :)
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
I would watch some videos online on covering a cake in fondant. It can be pretty tricky to get the fondant really smooth. I have been donig cakes for a couple years, so of course, practice makes perfect! :) My black fondant it Duff's fondant that you can buy at Michaels and is awesome! I used homemade buttercream fondant for the white stripes. You can find all kinds of fondant recipes online. Just email me if you have any questions! I would love to help you out! :) areinsbach.blogspot.com
