my friend wanted a retro-style dress and when i saw this polka dot material it was the first thing that came to mind

What advice would you give someone starting this project?
i just use my imagination, sometimes (when making things for other people) i use part of patterns to get size right, and other times i just take and article of clothing that fits me good to use as guide to create my own unique style clothes
