Clarus- Fingering Weight

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Knit This: Mastering Lace Shawls »

Difficulty:

Category: Knitting

Type of item: Accessory

For: Women

Style: Romantic, Funky, Retro / Vintage, Hipster, Classic

Materials

1 skein Shalimar Yarns Breathless in Oyster (Fingering Weight sock/shawl yarn) US Size 6 [4mm] needles

What was your inspiration?

I set out to design a top down shawl that could teach a shawl shaping technique, be fun to knit, and beautiful to wear... I liked designing and knitting Clarus so much that I knit it twice!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Take it one step at a time...

I knit with one needle under my arm (a Spanish lady taught me) so I can't use circular needles, do you think I can still take this course?

In Holland we knit also with one needle under the arm. I tought I couldnt do it; but I just tried and was surprised at how easy I got used to knitting with circular needles. It's a littlebit slower; but that's all ...

Hmmm, good question... I think you could still knit that way with two circulars, putting a stopper at the end of each, the problem is that you will end up with alot of stitches on your needle and the straights aren't long enough. Does this make sense?

As a child I also learned to put one needle under my arm. It makes knitting much more tense. I have now started to let this go free by putting my hands on my lap while knitting. In the beginning it went very slow but very soon I got used to it. Sometimes I still have a reflex that I want to slip it under my arm, but mostly it goes very well without it. It feels more relaxed now.

I've used Shalimar Breathless in Wisteria, absolutely beautiful yarn, though pricey. Try yarn.com - Paula

If you have the guts, you can try it... ;-) When I started knitting I always wanted to knit special things, nothing boring straight... it worked! Just make sure you write everything down so you can follow on paper what you have been knitting. Makes it easier to pick up your work later. Just try it with some cheaper wool, so you don't have to risk losing too much if it is not as you wanted.
