Civil War Quilt

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Re-Piecing the Past: Civil War Blocks Then & Now »

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Traditional

What are you most proud of?

I am so very proud of this quilt. The techniques that I learned were incredibly useful and easy to learn and adapt to. I would suggest this course to any beginner or anyone quilter who wants to improve their piecing skills.

I wont be able to quilt it for a month or two, but it will be finished. =)

Beautiful quilt top, I can't tell if it's quilted or not but I'm sure you'll do a nice job if you haven't already. do you use a long arm or home sewing machine?

Thank you. It is not quilted yet. I have been having machine issues, so...Hopefully I can start it very soon. I will be sewing it on my home machine; probably with an all over stitch because the quilt is so busy. I'm thinking...

Have you given any thought as to how you will quilt the top? I've been trying to figure out whether I'll do an all over panto of feathers, freestyle meandering or individual blocks? So many seams I'm leaning towards freestyle meandering but would love suggestions and ideas from others.
theoldcrow on craftsy.com
Jul 21, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
Thanks. Seams shouldnt be a huge issue for the most part. I think I will do some ver y basic free style feathering. Basic feathers I have gotten good at. The more advanced feathering still needs practice. I love to do feathers. :)

Thanks. I gotta tell you the log cabin is my least favorite because in hindsight the yellow is too loud for the quilt. That's why I stuck it at the bottom. lol I like the block by itself. :) And I'm not a huge fan of house Blocks either. Though this one went together easily.

I am trying to fit more time into my days. Aa it is I spend 6 to 8 hours behind the sewing machine six days a week and one day using a longarm machine at the local quilt store. Teaching has slowed me down a bit but still have managed 50 plus quilts this past year. Glad that he is sharing my passion for donating quilts...just have to be able to afford the fabric for both of us! Thats a challenge on social security funds.

My grandson just completed his first quilt. A gift to his mother...a hug for when she is not feeling well. It was a joy to teach him the basic skills and watch him really work at his seams and matching corners, etc. He even did the binding by hand and I have never had a better student. Passing on the love of quilting is always a humbling experience and it was surprised that he wants to get good enough to enter his work in shows...at nine years old we may have another John Flynn in the making. Your quilt really impressed him to move into fast forward.

I was pretty much a mediocre "piecer"; always fudging; always giving up some of my points for "squareness". But, I followed this class closely. The first thing I realized is that we were not too far off from the process Kate teaches. A few tweaks, a couple of changes and I have become extremely confident in my ability to trust the outcome through the process. And, to answer your fabric question: I did not buy any new fabric for this class. All the fabric comes from my personal stash. I happen to favor t raditional quilting and civil war repo fabrics. And, I love to use muslin. I will even coffee stain my muslin as I did for the border and some blocks. For me, muslin looks great in a quilt like this, and the coffee stain adds a bit of texture to the muslin. Thank you again for your comments.

LOL But, running out of fabric I was willing to cut into for this quilt. And, I turned the lights out in the room to place and balance the blocks. And, after all that I placed a couple wrong anyway. lol I have so enjoyed this class. I especially enjoyed seeing other people's color choices. ;)
