Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Stitch & Slash »

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Outdoorsy

Materials

4 Batiks with the Elk scene as the bottom layer. Embellished with wool and ribbon, plus beads and orange tinted tail feather from a Flicker. No birds were hurt in this creation.

What was your inspiration?

The Stitch & Slash course, with Carol Ann Waugh and then just trying out a different Fabric Layer, using Elk fibre in the background. We have a competition with Circles coming up and wanted to try something different.

What are you most proud of?

I see a body, head shape in the center, so I added bead and feather work to make it look like a headdress. Strangely enough I was thinking I needed some or a feather and the next morning a Northern Flicker left me a tail feather in the yard. Thoughtful of him.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Just enjoy. Nothing better than tearing up material.

This is beautiful! Gives me an idea on how to use some motif fabric I just bought.

Thank you, I enjoyed making this one as I live in a valley with plenty of Elk and Mountains. Hopefully your Motif fabric is Batiks. Batiks are easier to slash.

Good grief, I'm just stunned. I'm looking at the piece, and my brain is spinning, wondering how you knew just where those animals were, so you could let them show. Hmmm. Maybe hold it up to a window? It's absolutely wonderful, and thank you for sharing your gifted talent.

It was too simple to find the animals, I used the back of the print to show me where they were situated.

This is top drawer. The fabric choices as well as the somewhat monochromatic palate gives it a unique tribal vibe that is sorta new age and eclectic. It reminds me of a 21st century cave drawing. This is really creative. Good show!
