This is the earflap hat pattern. Ch 2, 6 hdc in 2nd ch from hook. Join with ss, ch 1, 2 hdc in same stitch as join and in remaining 5 hdc (12 hdc) join, ch 1, 2 hdc in same stitch and in remaining 11 hdc (24 hdc). Join, ch 1, 1 hdc in same st as join, 2 hdc in next st, *i hdc in next st 2 Hdc in next st* in remaining 22 hdc (36 hdc), join ch 1, 1 hdc in same stitch as join, 1 hdc in next stitch, 2 hdc in next stitch, continue around increasing 1 hdc every 3rd stitch (48 hdc). Continue even for 8 to 10 rnds (depending on size you want). Fasten off. Count over 7 stitches from join with right side of work facing join yarn, ch 1, starting in same stitch as join work 7 hdc, turn, ch 1, 7 hdc, turn ch, 1, skip 1st hdc, 4 hdc, work 2 hdc together (5 hdc), turn, ch 1, 5 hdc, turn, ch 1, skip 1st hdc, 2 hdc, work 2 hdc together, (3 hdc). Fasten off. With right side facing count over 20 stitches from front edge of earflap, join yarn, work another earflap the same as the first. Join contrast colour yarn to hat where you originally fastened off. sc in all stiches and around earflaps. Fasten off. For Monkey Do all increase rows and 1st even row in cream, fasten off, join grey, continue all even rows in grey, fasten off, Do earflaps in grey. Join pink for sc edging. Join pink to right side of hat at row where cream and grey join. Sc around outside through cream stitches. fasten off.Monkey features. Eyes (Make two) With black ww yarn ch 2, 6 hdc in 2nd chain from hook, join, fasten off leaving a long tail to sew eye on. Mouth With cream ww yarn ch 11, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 8 sc, 4 sc in last ch. Do not turn! Working up other side of ch sc 8, 2sc in last ch, join, ch 1, 2 sc in same stitch as join, sc 10, 2 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, 10 sc, 2 sc in last stitch. Join, fasten off leaving long tail. Ear (Make 2) ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join, ch 1, 2 sc in each stitch, join, *ch 1, 1 sc in each stitch, join* Repeat *-* twice more. Fasten off leavin long tail. Fold ear in half. Sew features to hat usin picture for placement.

What was your inspiration?
I got a really good price on this yarn and wanted to try my hand at chunky earflap character hats. Check out my chunky hootie too!

That I figured out how to adjust the pattern on the first try.
