What was your inspiration?
Babies inspire me! One of our friends had a new BeachBaby. I wanted to make her stocking because I had made one for her older brother (with the Boston sports teams as ornaments) So for Chloe I put her on our local beach (as a mermaid) with our local lighthouse in the background.
What are you most proud of?
The lighthouse is Minot's Light in Scituate. It's a really good recreation using thread not stone.
I pieced the background to get the right effect before machine embroidering & appliquing over it.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
My stockings are padded & lined. They shou8ld be made to last a lifetime and hold a lot of weight.
It should have some glitter. It doesn't show up well in these pix but the white band on the cuff & top are glittery and it has rhinestones for the berries in the holly on the cuff. And the mermaids dress is sequined fabric.
A few years ago my daughter asked me to remove the cuff on hers with her name on it and replace it with "mom". The stocking was over 30 years old and it was pretty emotional for me to take off the old cuff & replace it with "Mom". We left the old cuff inside the stocking.
