Materials

50/50 gumpaste and fondant. Floral wire. 8" base cake board.

What was your inspiration?

I had seen pictures of babies taken with various props, including flowers. I wanted to try to reproduce something along those lines.

What are you most proud of?

Making and suspending the 3D snowflake over the baby.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

I made this baby using an 8" cake board as a base. It could actually be made without it so that it could be placed on a cake. The baby was made using gumpaste and a mold. Then shading was added using edible food colouring powders. The Pointsietta leaves and greenery were made using a 50/50 mix of gumpaste and fondant, coloured Christmas red using gel colours then, once dry, enhanced using powder colour and edible sparkle powder. I used the 50/50 mix instead of straight gumpaste, because it allows me more time to shape each leaf individually prior to and during the process of putting the flower altogether. I use little balls of plastic wrap to separate each petal/leaf while it is drying. The snowflakes on the base were made using a cutter. Then I add white pearl dragees. The suspended snow flake was also made using a cutter, however, I put it together so that it was 3D. Not an easy task. Many of them broke before I was successful. I very carefully used white thread and a needle to pull the thread through a space at the top of the snowflake, then hung it from the wire which had been previously formed and glued onto the bottom of the base. Make sure you give yourself a lot of time to complete this - I did it over a period of 3 days, allowing things to dry thoroughly between steps. Also required: lots of patience! Making something like this makes you feel like you have fat fingers. LOL
