Christmas Apron / Housedress

More festive than my Pizza Hut apron!

More festive than my Pizza Hut apron!

Pattern Info

Pattern info for this project can be found here:
Butterick 4790

Instructions

I made this 2 sizes too large to accommodate bulky Christmas sweaters. The photo, where I'm wearing it over a normal dress, shows how big it is!

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Holiday, Retro / Vintage

Materials

Cotton quilting fabric

What was your inspiration?

The lightweight poinsettia-patterned cotton was just screaming to be made into something, and the 1952 Retro Butterick pattern was the perfect housedress. I've been wanting a holiday apron festive enough to entertain casual guests in for a while, so it all just came together.

What are you most proud of?

I'm proud of how nice my buttons and snaps look, even though they can't be seen. I totally credit Susan Kalje's Couture Dress (here on Craftsy) class for that!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

It's an apron/housedress. Don't feel guilty if you use a machine hem and it isn't lined with silk! I probably could have gotten away with it one size too big, but wanted to be sure it would be comfortable over bulky things. If you are going to do as I did and use it as an apron, I'd recommend trying it on after basting using the type of clothes you will be wearing under it.

Thanks! I found a piece of vintage cloth from Cranston Print Works, which was in my grandparent's neighborhood, and will be making another spring/summer one from that, hopefully using homemade seam binding but no guarantees! :-) And you're right, a lot of the housedresses and lounging clothes are almost elegant for evening by today's standards.
