What was your inspiration?
The pictures say it all! It was a great day! This is my sister's granddaughter. My sister died 5 and 6 months before her daughters delivered their babies. It was their first children and it was both a terrible and beautiful time for them. This baby and her sisters consider us their "Mom-Mom" and "Big Daddy". We love them all dearly! We see all of our great nieces and nephews from that part of our families - my sister would be so proud of them all.
What are you most proud of?
I had never made anything like this before. I took a class on heirloom sewing where we learned to use entredeux and lace to make the "fabric" of the dress. I used a basic pattern for a dress but designed the tucks and design of the lace.
This is a major project, but it is really worth it and the pride you have in the baby is enough, but knowing that you made the dress and bonnet is a bonus.
As a side note, it cost me $100+/- and I was offered $400 for it by someone that saw it at the shipping office of UPS!
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Take your time and don't multitask during your project! This can be a costly project - materials and time to make the dress and bonnet. If you are distracted, you can make some really costly mistakes! I remade the bodice because I trimmed an area too close.
