Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Design Your Own Handbag »

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Accessory

For: Women

Style: Casual, Cute

Materials

Duck canvas, cotton (lining), cotton rope (handles), metal closure and feet.

What was your inspiration?

Brett - the class instructor. She was a wonderful teacher, explaining things very well. I'm new to sewing but she made it seem so simple and was very encouraging in her teaching.

What are you most proud of?

Finishing it. It turned out great. Several people wanted it so I had a drawing on FB for it. I had over 50 entries. It was fun giving it away.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Watch the entire class before starting a project. I did and it really helped me to design the bag and make fewer mistakes.

What did you use for interfacing and stabilizer?

I believe it was a 809 deco bond stabilizer. It was light to medium weight since I was using duck canvas.

Here is a very good article on interfacing for making bags: http://www.sewsweetness.com/2012/05/all-about-bag-interfacing.html

The labels are Tailor Sew-In Computer Printer Fabric found in the iron-on section of fabric stores.

I read you are new to sewing. This is amazing!!!! Love your fabric choice. I like your label inside the Cheetah bag. Did you make it? I have been looking for ages for tags/labels that look professional. I don't have a machine that does monograms. Is that what you did your with? I also like the brand name you chose.

Thank you so much, Rita! I actually did make the label. At JoAnn's Fabrics they have a section where you would buy iron on transfers - these were in that section, although they are not iron-ons. Its an 8.5" x 11" piece of material with a paper backing. I think you can get 10 sheets or a package of 3 sheets. You design your label on your computer then print onto this sheet. Let sit for 10 minutes peel off backing; run an iron over the material to set the ink; and, cut out to the size you want then sew to your fabric. It was really easy. I used Excel, inserted clip-art, played with fonts. Then I copied it so I could get several on one sheet. When I get home tonight, I'll get the exact name of the product and post on here for you! Thank you again for your kind words!

To be new to sewing you did an excellent job... love, Love, LOVE your color choices! I'm jealous in the most flattering sense, lol. You have motivated me to stop procrastinating (being afraid to make mistakes), get up off my butt, and start creating my dream bag once and for all! Thank you eMOtionelle for sharing your pic and your story.
