Instructions

um, I designed this based on what I had at home. No pattern required, but I'm happy to supply measurements. It is just a few squares from a charm bac, arranged so that the colour groups flow diagonally, then sashed with white strips.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Children

Style: Traditional, Cute

Materials

100% cotton (one moda charm pack for the front, plus white cotton for sashing and a printed cotton from Ikea for the backing). Wadding is 100% bamboo.

What was your inspiration?

My colleague is expecting her first baby in September. This charm pack seemed to be quite autumnal in colour to me - and i hope it is gender neutral!

What are you most proud of?

I really struggle free motion embroidering the labels of my quilts - this is about the best my embroidery has ever been!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

This is a small quilt, but still useful. It is a great size to practise free motion quilting.

Thank-you! I'd happily make a quilt for you, but I'm a bit far away in the UK. I'm sure a quilter on Etsy would be able to help, I know that there are lots of people willing to make custom quilts. Good luck!

I am new to crafty and quilting, now I know what to do with all those charm packets I have. I want to make hertiage quilts for each of my kids and grandkids (7 with one on the way), but know I have alot to learn. But I think I can make some nice quilts with pattern and maybe embellish them a bit with fancy stitching, embroidery and maybe some applicates. Thanks for sharing.

I'm sure you'll be making lovely quilts - baby quilts are a good size to start with, and charm packs make it a lot easier to get a good a result! I look forward to seeing them!!

great! This is really easy, there are no corners to match up - a stacked coin quilt would be another easy design too - I used that idea for my first baby quilt. :-)

This quilt is adorable. You mentioned free motion quilting. Can you explain what that means? I've just started planning my first quilt, and I'm learning what to do slowly by picking up tips here and there. I've noticed that there's a wide range of patterns being used for the actual quilting part. And I thought it was just the patchwork part that I had to design! Now I need to choose a quilting pattern too. Does free motion quliting mean you just make it at random? Yours doesn't look random though. Maybe it refers to the action you use with the sewing machine, as in a free motion embroidery style... So how do you decide which quilting pattern to apply?

Hi, sorry for the delay, I have been in hospital/recovering :-) I expect you have found out by now, but free motion refers to the fact that you move around the fabric, not the machine. You lower or cover the feed dogs that grip the fabric, you might do this to create machine embroidery too. This is random, just meandering around. :-) There are some great tutorials on youtube and blogs :-)

I really like this. I can see you have put a lot of work into it. I have thought of this design myself and had it in the back of my mind. It is so nice to see that it is going to work for me. I am making quilts for all the children in our family. This is going to be perfect. I love the fabric you chose as well, I adore paisley.

This looks so EASY, even young children could learn how to do it. I myself have a 9 years old great-granddaughter I have taught to sew some.

Oct 10, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
Great! I think we should learn to sew at a young age - I could sew and knit before I started school at 4. i think this is easy, though you kind of have to line up the blocks with the sashing -you could definitely make it even easier...

I love your quilt! By the way how do you do free motion embroidery?
Amanda on craftsy.com
Oct 10, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
Thanks! I lower the feed dogs and use a darning foot. With thicker quilting thread i often have to alter the bobbin tension a little. The I just have to focus/relax and get into the rhythm of it.

hi, I have a question about the white strips. Did you add short white strips in between the squares to make rows, and then connected a row with the squares and a white strip row? Or did you somehow only use long white strips? Thank you, Keren
Amanda on craftsy.com
Aug 13, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
The first! Yes, I added short white strips between blocks to make rows, then joined the rows with long white strips. I didn't worry too much, but you need to pin a little bit to keep the squares aligned when you are sewing up the rows.

Great! Have you looked at the Moda Bake Shop site? They have loads of great (free) patterns for quilts using charm packs and other cuts. I love the baby pinwheel quilt, it uses just one charm pack too. :-)
