What advice would you give someone starting this project?
laugh about your mistakes and learn from them- and do not throw away any thing but set them in a bin or a place where you can take them out and say, see I am human just like everyone else. Have a sense of humor about the things you are making and realize that there really is no wrong way to do anything- different perhaps but not wrong. The most important thing is to enjoy what you are doing and do not make it work. :)
