Materials

I used a very thick heavy Boucle fabric I had in my stash. This project started as this being my test muslin for some beautiful baby pink wool and cashmere fabric I bought to make this cape. Now I will be using the other fabric on another project. This cape is waiting for "space tape" so I can finish the machine button holes. http://www.junkjeanspeople.com/TapesandJig.htm

What was your inspiration?

I have seen so many pictures in magazines with people wearing great capes with jeans and boots. I live in Canada so a great cape and turtle neck and comfy boots are a great casual look.

What are you most proud of?

That I did not quit. My pattern matches perfectly. Tried a new technique from Nancy Zieman book and the collar is perfect with no bulk at front point.

OMG was this fabric tough to work with the metallic threads and the thickness of the fabric made it a challenge for my Baby Lock. But I played and played with test scraps till I got the stitches good.

Then finishing seams. Well they ravel like crazy so I knew the serger was my only hope. Watched the serger class here on craftsy and decided to try both a (4) thread wide and narrow. Nope. Then tried a (3) thread overlock and it worked. Thank you Amy Allen for your great serger course.

My next challenge was the button holes. This fabric is so lofty the stitches are invisible no matter what color thread I use. Tried basting nope. Tried using tissue marked with button hole placement. Nope. Finally I asked for help on pattern review and I was sent a link to "space Tape" what a cool notion. Imagine button holes spaced on tape you can sew through and tear away. So now I wait on the "space tape"

The other challenge is to find a suitable dark navy blue wide belt with silver hardware. Nope. I went to my local mall and spoke with shoemaker he took my measurements and is making me a belt in the color I need and adding silver hardware.

I will take a picture of me in cape with buttons and belt as soon as I get the buttons done.

What am I most proud of that a muslin will be a finished garment if it kills me!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

If you want a cape check out all the fabulous patterns. They are a quick and easy project (just use a easier fabric)

Plan your garment, finishing such as buttons and belt and it will be a breeze.

Scheri this is beautiful and what a fabulous job you have done matching the pattern in the fabric.... I can imagine how much you can't wait to wear this one and I'm looking forward to seeing you in it! It's simply going to be stunning and I'm sure you are going to feel gorgeous in it too!! I wished I lived in a cold climate to be able to make something like this as well :)

Teresa thank you for your comments. Yes I spent a great deal on cutting out the pieces single matching plaids and then basted by hand all the pieces before I sewed anything. It worked beautifully. This is I learned in The Couture Dress here on Craftsy

You've been busy. Looks wonderful. I agree capes are in and is on my list to make as well. I am curious: did Nancy's book help you with the collar points or the matching? Also, thanks for the tip on JunkJeans.People - good stuff there.

Scheri, this is beautiful! You did an astounding job of matching the pattern. I have yet to work with boucle. I have a gorgeous confetti looking one in my stash that is my Chanel jacket in waiting. I will definitely be taking the serger class on Craftsy. I have one, but it has rarely been used. Just need to get familiar with it and start putting it to use. My 2nd daughter is wanting "a red-riding hood cape, hood and all." I'll start looking for patterns. Please add to this post and let us all know how the space tape works out.
