Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Machine Quilting Negative Space »

Instructions

I had to stop every now and then and intentionally relax while quilting. I was concentrating so hard I was making the most ridiculous faces!

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Casual

Materials

Cotton flannel and madras, cotton batting and thread, spray baste

What was your inspiration?

Multitasking! I was working on a top for Elizabeth Hartman's Craftsy class and needed something to practice on for Angela's class. I was using up my stash so had to make do with some colors I wouldn't normally use. My mom kept admiring it so I gave it to her for Christmas.

What are you most proud of?

That even though there are tons of imperfections, it still looks as good as it does. Swirls now seem easy. I also tried out some things and learned from them - such as the echo quilting around the large circles didn't make them pop as much as quilting small scale motifs right up next to the large circles would have.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

If you are working on a regular sewing machine, keep your practice piece small - no bigger than 40 x 40 ". This will allow you to focus more on the quilting and less on moving around and supporting a large quilt.
