Instructions

Make several muslns. Pattern has plenty of ease and I had to figure out how to get rid of much excess fabric. Especially in bodice back.

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Classic, Retro / Vintage

What was your inspiration?

This pattern was made by Gretchen Hirsch aka Gertie. On Gertie's blog, she suggested a sew-along group on Flickr to make the coat. The group help was invaluable and inspiring.

What are you most proud of?

Finishing and fitting! The coat is voluminous with a circle skirt and the smallest size requires5 yds of fabric, plus lining and interlining. After determining where I needed to remove fabric from bodice, I pared down skirt panels as the large circle skirt overwhelmed my frame. I made bound buttonholes, designed my own collar to flip up and designed my own cuffs. Gertie adds posts with help on steps, but her schedule got way behind and I moved ahead and made it on my own because I want it finished for an upcoming trip.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Join the Flickr group, be prepared to make several muslins and the coat does take a lot of time. But I am very pleased with my end result.

Did you make the Muslims out of muslin fabric or fabric closer to your fashion fabric? It is beautiful!

First one was typical muslin fabric, 2nd was a thicker fabric left over from making pillows; so neither were close to the wool. But the 2nd was heavier. Thank you for the compliment.

What do you do with the muslins once you make your fashion garment? After all these years of sewing, I'm just starting to use muslins and rarely make the same garment twice. Just curious.

Use for scraps? Dust rags? Throw away? Some thing you can make out of a muslin fabric that is similar to fashion fabric and it turns out good enough that you can wear it! In this case, I made the full skirt out of muslin and I will use those pieces over again for other patterns.
