What was your inspiration?
My husband play the pipes and he loves his bee hive, which you may be able to see in the background. We saw this material in our local haberdashery store and immediately thought about the honeycomb (although if you look closely you can see that the print is supposed to look like wire).
What are you most proud of?
I love the bees and their fluffy thoraxes, it took a while to sort out how to represent their fluffiness but eventually worked with a full 6 strands of embroidery silk knotted the end went up through the fabric from back to front then down from front to back about 3 mm away then back up through the resulting stitch from back to front and cut the thread off about 10 mm from the fabric. Once all the knots were in place I separated each thread with a needle and fluffed it up. This was then trimmed back to give the shape I needed.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
I worked from a picture but was not a slave to it, I used it to give me a basic idea of gradations of colour through the abdomen and then played with it.
