Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Vintage Cakes, Modern Methods »

Instructions

What you showcase your wedding cakes on is just as important as the cake itself. I used three wooden treadle sewing machine drawers taped together with strong shipping tape to give it a retro 1920's look.

Difficulty:

Category: Cake Decorating

Type of item: Food

For: Other

Style: Retro / Vintage

Materials

Royal Icing, powdered food colors mixed with vodka, artists brushes, gumpaste, cutter, gumpaste mold and rolling pin. Plus an extruder for the vines.

What was your inspiration?

My inspiration was the Craftsy Course - giving me the confidence to try this method. Reading a book of instructions wouldn't have been enough, watching Colette do it firsthand was pure inpiration.

What are you most proud of?

So proud of the reaction this cake garnered at a recent wedding show.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

If intimidated, roll out a square of fondant and practice on it before taking on a real cake. You will be amazed at how silly your fear was and how easily this went together.

Thanks - took a photo of the prettiest part, Thinking of adding one more flower to the tier above. Had a hard time with the rating. It's not hard but the hardest part was getting up the nerve to start. You can see the whole cake on my web site nhweddingcakes.com
