What was your inspiration?

All the meaning that quilting blocks have, and celebrating important dates in the family. My in-laws were missionaries in Japan for over 24 years, and have also lived in several states in the US, always serving. Originally, I was only going to make the Georgia and Ohio blocks (where they were born), but I just couldn't stop there. My husband came with the idea of making a block for all of the places they've lived and worked at.

Also, I used techniques from different Craftsy classes: Quick Strip Paper Piecing, Re-Piecing the Past, 2012 BOM, Inspired Modern Quilts and Scrap Quilting. There was one particular block for which I could not find any guidelines nor patterns, so I put a pattern together myself (using a picture of the state flag as a guide).

What are you most proud of?

Finishing my first big quilt! I know it's not the typical quilt, but they were looking for a cover for their washer and drier, so I decided to piece the front, rather than just making a regular cover.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Things might look overwhelming, but tackle a little at a time. Try to focus only on the part you're working with at the moment, without thinking of the project as a whole. Also, having a deadline (Christmas) helped me because I wasn't able to put things off when something was difficult; I just had to keep on and deal with it! It was a good learning experience. :)
