Home & Garden: bottle bugs

bottle bugs

Is this your project? Can you share instructions or a pattern with the Craftsy community?

Difficulty:

Category: Home & Garden

Type of item: Plant or Flower

For: Garden

Style: Whimsical, Retro / Vintage

Materials

old glass bottles, glass beads, wire and garden stakes

What was your inspiration?

I saw these at a craft show, they were rather costly so I decided to try and make my own

What are you most proud of?

I like mine better than the ones at the craft show. The longer they are in the garden the rustier the wire gets, the bugs look great with this aging.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

When you attach the wire to the garden stake you don't need to be overly generous with the amount of wire you spin around the stake to create a spring like tube. The bottles aren't very heavy so they won't require a lot of wire.

What kind of wire do you use & how do you wrap the wire to connect the stake/bottle?

Not sure what kind of wire specifically it is very soft and bendy and I bought it at a local lumber store. I use bamboo garden stakes and just wrap the wire around the stakes, two pieces one in each direction and wrap it VERY tightly to create a spring like effect., I also put some hot glue on the bottom side just to keep the wire tight together. (probably dont need the glue).

The wire has gone very rusty now, I like that effect.
