Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Craftsy Block of the Month 2012 »

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Funky, Classic, Traditional

Materials

Kaffe Fassett fabrics and various batiks

What was your inspiration?

Well, I just finished remaking the February Balkan Puzzle Block, I like it much better than the gold. I STILL do not like that technique though, don't care for the unstable edges, just my personal preference.

What are you most proud of?

OOOHHH! Only two more blocks to go! Then I am putting this puppy together and quilting the you know what out of it! It will be done just in time for some cold weather enjoyment.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

If you are thinking about starting this class, I highly recommend it! It's lots of fun and you can see from the variety of work that people have submitted, there are many ways in which to express your creativity within these confines! Enjoy!!!

So what did you do with your first Balkan puzzle block? I really liked that one! Of course all your work is great, but I read that you didn't like it. Hope it found a good home!

Ahh...it's getting the red[headed stepchild treatment! Personally I like a couple renegade elements in my quilt to catch the eye. Maybe you can make it into a quilt for your cat?

Your blocks are gorgeous but the first July block is the most amazing block I have seen in my life!! Totally awesome! Do you ever go to www.quiltinghaven.com?

Hi Cherylsea, no I haven't been to quiltinghaven.com I'm not much for chat rooms because I work full time at a doctors office so I don't get to check in but a few times.

Gorgeous blocks, looking forward to seeing how you join them together. The replacement block works so much better, you were correct to replace it. Now you have a block to start another quilt from.

ok I understand why you replaced the original Balkan puzzle block... Did you know Kaffee Fasset is in his 70's? I didn't even know it was a real person until we started the BOM... :^O

How many different fabrics are you using? I know some blocks only have two fabrics (January), but I wonder how many you have all together. I'm getting ready to start and I want to make all my blocks coordinate like you have done, but feel unsure about how many different fabrics to get.

Well, I started out with about 15 different fabrics all from the Kaffe Fassett Collections and added a batik and hand dyed....I had some 1/2 yard pieces of fabric that I really liked and supplemented that with a variety of fat quarters. I purchased most of the fabric from www.fabric.com as they often have great sales on Kaffe fabrics, and there is a little store about 1.5 hours away from here that has an amazing collection. I ended up purchasing some Kaffe that I will not use in this quilt, but probably use in another. I have a big stash after 40+ years of quilting but there is always an excuse to shop for more...LOL. I didn't start out the project with an over arching theme in mind, it kind of developed as we went along. You see the one block with the gold and teal...that will get redone probably this weekend in fabrics that will work in this quilt a little better. I get a large 2 gallon zip lock bag and I keep all my fabrics neatly folded in that for this project, I use a second one to store my blocks and I use a 1 gallon size for my scraps. I Never toss any fabric scraps away.

Thanks for the reply. Your blocks are beautiful and you have a good eye for color. I wish I could take you shopping with me! I haven't been quilting very long and don't have a large stash.

i'm going to suggest that you make one of your first purchases an artist or quilter's color wheel' the also have color cards. Learn how to use it' it only takes a few minutes to understand. then start out with a fabric you love....use your color wheel and see what the colors next to that predominant color are....select some fabrics in that range and you will have a blending and peaceful quilt...select the color opposite for a quilt with contrast...mentally draw a triangle and use those colors for natural excitement....google color theory and you will get a host of info. Another little trick....all the work has been done for you by the designer...on the border of your fabric' along the selvage' you will see a series of color dots. Those are the colors that the designer used to make that fabric you love....go find fabrics with those colors and you will be surprised how easy it is to make a beautiful quilt with little effort. Can't wait to see your selections.

DonaH, I use a website called BigHugeLabs.com and select their mosaic maker. It lets you load your photos into a variety of formats. I am working on a recipe book for our children right now and I use their program to show the step by step process of a recipe. There are a multitude of uses!
