This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Craftsy Block of the Month 2012 »

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Materials

Black, White and Red cotton fabrics

What are you most proud of?

I just decided to do it right away -- my machine was still warmed up from doing the July blocks... LoL!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Be very careful to sew with a scant quarter inch seam on this one... it does not have much room to spare. My block finished at exactly 12.5 inches, but I was expecting more... my seams "seemed" very shallow to me.....

Looking at this and the other blocks you have done, I can see that you have a good eye for what works, each block holds its own very well, you have tallent, will be following your work now.

I am flattered. Thank you for your compliment. This class has been a wonderful confidence-builder for me. Each new block is a new challenge, and I am enjoying the process.

Thanks... I just followed what Amy said about stitching direction, and "nesting" the seams. I have learned so much in this class... never thought I would want to try triangles, but after doing the Feb blocks, I was hooked... still not always perfect, but I am no longer intimidated by matching up the points!

Lol! August blocks came a couple days early! I was ready! (but I'm going to study the written instructions before I start on the second one -- a double star)

I totally agree about having a 1/4" foot. Mine also has the metal guide. Makes sense to purchase one, since quilting is all about the "1/4"seam" or scant. Mine wasn't expensive. Maybe one that's your machine type is on Amazon,

Thanks, Ladybev! I never dreamed I would be doing a mystery quilt, or a block of the month... and I also never would have believed how much fun it is to participate in this inspiring project!

Looks awesome!!! (Just finished my July's, tomorrow I will do the August's, so my mashine is warmed up as well. But a little bit of sleep is necessary... lol). Like your fabrics!

Di4N4, Looks like you are first up! Well done. Love the extra border around your center medallion. Adds a lot to the overall intricacy look.

Thanks, this was a fun one... I wanted to use a certain fabric for the center, but it just wasn't quite the right size, so I ended up adding a little bit to it... kind of like we did on those log cabin blocks.

I don't think there's going to be much room either on the double star block, I think I will be taking it very carefully as well. I really should invest in a quarter inch foot, am currently using masking tape as a guide.

Thanks, I rushed through, but I was VERY careful about my scant quarter-inch for all of the seams... My finished block was barely 12.5 inches. I trimmed a teensy bit, just after I posted the photo. There is not much room to spare, on this one!

Oh how I Luv my quarter inch foot!! You should defininitely look into getting one! Especially if you sew bleary-eyed, late into the night like I do! Haha! Mine has a little guide that keeps my fabric edge lined right up! it is great!
