What was your inspiration?

The Fabric... It was Japanese paper lanterns in beautiful bright colors...

What are you most proud of?

The fun creative process. The "boat" on the water was part of a hexagon I trimmed off the #7 block.... sometimes your scraps sing out to you!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

This one evolved as I (we ~ my sons were FULL of suggestions) went along. We were kind of going for the beautiful lantern scene in Disney's version of Rapunzel called "Tangled" (cute movie). Just have fun. I'm sure I broke several quilting rules, but it's my quilt. :D At least all the parts are hexagons!

Hey MO, guess what!? I found another crafter that has the blue wave fabric in her project! Too funny! Look in the quilting project section, her name is Stacy7.

You on the otherhand created a masterpiece. Keep those in the car to do as busy work. Love it, it is beautiful.

TY WVLISA! I starched and pressed around the templates, and machine basted, and then machine sewed these on. Avoided a lot of the hand stitching that way. My hand freeze up on me at unexpected moments. I'd probably do the same for a pillow case, just because of the use they would receive.

I bought the lantern fabric at JoAnn's as a fat quarter. I bought it during the President's Day sale in Feb. You can see bits of it in my Balkan Puzzle BOM block too. I love it!. I'm going to use some of it for accent on my g-daughter's outfits too. Jusst a note... almost EVERYthing pops on black! That's what I've found out! :D Thanks for the compliment.

Blue 'wave' fabric is from my considerably OLDER stash. It's a heavier cotton I've had in my stash for at least 20 years. LOL And another quilter in the BOM is using it from her stash as well. Tooo funny!

I spotted this a few days ago when I was idly browsing the site, It's just taken me ages to find it again in order to show it to a non computer using friend. I've now realised the advantage of pressing the follow this crafter button. Thanks for sharing this inspirational block.

Stunning! Fabulous idea and result. What thread did you use for the free motion swirls? Was it free motion or did you hand stitch those? The thread looks pretty thick. Did you have one color on top and one in the bobbin and use a machine quilt stitch?
mo.sews on craftsy.com
Apr 03, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
Thank you! It was Coats and Clark embroidery thread. It wasn't free motion exactly... I drew what I wanted with a white pencil and stitched with my machine following the line. I had one color on top and black in the bobbin. Some of the machine stitches did multiple stitches so it looks thick and thin. I'm not sure what you mean by machine quilt stitch, but it sounds awesome!
deborahc53 on craftsy.com
Apr 03, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
What I meant by "machine quilt stitch" is a stitch that some machines can do that looks like hand quilting (with spaces in between stitches). You put invisible thread on top and a color thread in the bobbin to make it. Your stitches kind of looked like that except I thought perhaps you had used different shades of the same color thread in the top and bobbin. But whatever you did turned out looking great! :D

Hi deborahc53... I read my manual, and YES I have the quilting stitch on my Pfaff. I also found out my PC Design stuff is antiquated!!! lol so I'm not sure if I can use the fancy embroidery or not.... but the quilting one?? I'm going to be working on that! ;^D

Is that a print that looks like yarn?

Apr 02, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
The boat is the hexy that got trimmed off from #7, and it looked like a boat, so I used it, but the top of the boat was a raw edge so I zig-zagged over it (twice). It does look like yarn. :D
mo.sews on craftsy.com

I posted a close up of the boat... maybe that will answer your question. :D

You know how you can buy fabric that looks like bricks or wood or even sky or food? - well the water on yours looks like yarn.

OHHHH! it's regular cotton fabric... maybe sport weight... it's left over from when I sewed for an exercise gear place.

The colors are vivid and beautiful! My daughter and I were talking about April's blocks and I told her that someone suggested using blue for the grass as water and she said "Yeah, then put a little boat on there!" Then I found yours a short time later - now that's cool! I think this is one of the coolest things I've seen!

Apr 02, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
As Pieceful1 knows... since we've been using the same vintage (1980's) wave fabric, it was just daring me to use for the grass strip! And then the hexy I cut off doing #7 block was still on the table looking like a boat, so I used it. The raw edge is closed with a zig-zag stitch, so that's probably the yarn looking part. It's machine embroidery thread. And I used a few different colors of it, and different machine stitches and stitch lengths to do the swirly things around the 'moon' and through the 'sky'. Thanks for the "cool" comment!!!!

LOL!I have it in my pieceful peacock blocks. As soon as I finish it I will post picture. It's delayed because I have to save for some fabric to finish it. On the wave fabric I'm not sure if I will use it on the hexagons. Not sure YET! LOL!
