Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Traditional

Materials

Hand painted 100% silk shot taffeta

What was your inspiration?

The material was my inspiration. It was given to me by a friend of my mum's. I think it could be for home decor use, but the color was too lovely for curtains. It is hand painted and although you can't see it on the photo, I managed to put a blue bird on the front of the skirt.

What are you most proud of?

It's the first garment I've made for over two years. I have put weight on (28lbs) and can't seem to shift it. I was going to wait until I lost the weight to make the dress, but life is too short.
The dress fits me perfectly, after adjustments by me.
I have lined the dress fully and changed the construction to fit in with using an overlocker.
My new sewing machine and overlocker were both a dream to use on silk, and I will be doing more dressers in future. But a bit longer and without the waist detail!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

This is very easy to make and I would recommend anyone to make it.

Thank you. I have to date now lost 21lbs in weight, so will have to go back and take in the dress!
