I used tea-dyed muslin to create the 13" x 15" base for this mixed media art quilt. I painted sections, added hand created paper collage pieces. I also made the hand sewn, puff embellishment 'blossom'. I added the battenburg lace 'flower' and vintage buttons, fiber and other beads, then machine quilted the entire piece. The back is finished with a piece of vintage fabric, hand sewn. I've attached a wood rod and antique gold chain for hanging.
What was your inspiration?
Color and mood are usually my inspiration for creating everything. I can be inspired by a piece of glass, stone, wood or rusty metal. In this piece the colors and idea of the flower blooming and the dragonfly being present just came together for me in this bright, happy art quilt.
What are you most proud of?
The finished product, of course! :-) When starting a mixed media piece you're never sure how it'll turn out.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Let yourself go! Just stay to a basic theme without trying to force yourself to a strict idea and you'll do great. Use colors you like. Use a different bug if you don't happen to like dragonflies. Use and hand cut flower if you don't have a lace piece handy. It's all about having fun and creating a mood, rather than trying to create a copy. Just have fun!
