Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Free Motion Quilting a Sampler »

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Home

Style: Romantic, Traditional, Classic

Materials

Cotton fabric, polyester wadding and polyester thread for the FMQ (as recommended by Leah Day).

What was your inspiration?

Amy Butler's and Leah Day's classes.

What are you most proud of?

Getting it to look okay, even though I was a bit worried that I wouldn't! (Some of the blades are a bit wonky, but it hasn't put me off the idea of possibly making a whole quilt with Dresden Plate blocks!)

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Go for it!

This is terrific! Nice colors and the texture is really fun! I looked at several of your blocks just now, but will wear myself out commenting on each one. So suffice it to say Ms Suffolk, they are some fun stuff! ...and now let me go untangle my tongue!

Thank you so much! I just finished the whole thing last night (bleeding fingers now, from all that hand-sewing round the border!). Will post a picture shortly.

I really like your quilt blocks and FMQ looks great. I was wondering if there is a photo of the whole finished quilt? Or maybe I just haven't seen it yet?

Just finished it (last night - 14 February), so will be posting a picture shortly. At the moment I'm waiting for the sun to come round into the window to make a nice photo. Thank you for your kind comments.

Thank you, Caraline - I'm on the home straight now and simply dying to finish this! It's been such a marathon as I didn't start until October!

Thank you - I need so much more practice, but I'm always in too much of a hurry. Patience is not something I have a lot of!

The squiggles were the easiest bit, much to my surprise. It's the straight lines that faze me!

Hello Pat, I have been really busy working and not had anytime to look at anything, today is my first opportunity and have signed up for leah's free motion class and with my extra hard earned money have just purchased a Janome Horizon MC8200QC machine with an 11" free arm ! ! Any hoo, I am waffling - this looks absoluately amazing !

You are going to have such fun with this class! I'd recommend the "quilt as you go" method if, like me, you've never done much FMQ before, particularly on a big quilt. Wow! You'll positively whizz through this with your snazzy machine now!
