Block 17

Pointy thing

Pointy thing

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Free Motion Quilting a Sampler »

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Home

Style: Traditional, Classic, Romantic

Materials

Cotton fabric and thread for piecing; polyester wadding and thread for quilting.

What was your inspiration?

Amy Gibson's BOM and Leah Day's course on free motion quilting a sampler.

What are you most proud of?

I rather liked doing the escargots. Leah had suggested escargot in the middle of an earlier block, but as I had a fairy in it, I didn't have a got at escargots. I've certainly done a few now!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

If you're going to do the escargots on this block, don't make them too small - I did and it's flattened the block out rather a lot.

Thank you - but all credit must go to Amy Gibson's Block of the Month course and also Leah Day's Free Motion Quilting a Sampler course - without them I hadn't a clue!

I have just started this class myself and love what you are doing with quilting the BOM blocks. Well done!

Very pretty, you could hang this on the wall all by itself. I love the combination of colors and the fun style of the pattern!

Thank you! It's not my favourite block, but I think I may possibly do this one again one day, in different colours now that I have an idea what to do!

Thank you Pam. I think, if I were to do this block again, I'd do it slightly differently as I don't think the little "flags" are at all well arranged!

Everything has turned out beautiful...I am still working on the stitch in the ditch, as I put my quilt together already...it certainly got heavier! But I am totally enjoying the process...will post my ME quilt when it is done. Stay tuned...

You are almost done with the FMQ on this quilt! I just know you'll love it! I'm pretty sure that I'll like doing escargots, too, because in and out spirals are my "go to" stitch. If you find that this stitch flattens out your block, you can remember to use it on background sections that you want to recede so that another piece of the block can stand out strongly in relief.

That's an excellent idea! Thank you! My quilting won't be finished until after Christmas now as I've let it creep up on me and I'm left with far too many other things to do!

All your blocks are coming along fabulously! You go, girl! I had the same thing with the escargots - flattened the block. It's hard to change scale on some of these quilting motifs - more practice, I guess.

Everything I do seems to get smaller - my "pebbles" are more like grit!
