Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Free Motion Quilting a Sampler »

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Home

Style: Romantic, Classic, Traditional

Materials

Cotton fabric and thread for piecing; polyester wadding and thread for quilting.

What was your inspiration?

Amy Butler's BOM course and Leah Day's course on free motion quilting a sampler.

What are you most proud of?

Using a bit of imagination and not just copying Leah's example this time. (I actually chickened out of quilting the pebbles in the lime green sections as I'm not very good at them!)

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Just keep going - as the sections are all quite small, they don't take very long.

Great lines! I think your lines in the green suit your block well... good choice ;-) Nothing wrong with your pebbling either... 10 foot rule remember!

If the 10 foot rule means standing 10 feet away, I think I'll times that by three! Thank you for being so kind!

turned out pretty good. must just about have them all done now. A little tip (no not a criticism) when doing straight lines, turn your work the other way around and use you foot as a guide, I found this works great and while your lines are pretty straight, mine werent, so I had to try something that would make then turn out perfect or near as. so if you are right handed, works as though you are left handed, and visa versa. not sure that makes sense. if not let me know and I will try better

I did use the edge of the foot as a guide but I still went a bit wobbly! I only seem to be able to sew straight(ish) lines towards myself (the usual way for machine sewing) so it was as well that I'm quilting all the blocks separately - I would have had a real wrestle with a big quilt! Only three more to go, but they're going to have to be on hold until after Christmas - too much to do, so little time to do it! Why does it always creep up on me? It's on the same date every year, after all, so I ought to see it coming!

Your straight lines are so evenly spaced! This looks just great. What is it about pebbles? They turn into scribbles for me every time.

The even spaces were a sheer fluke - but I think using the edge of the machine foot helped! Yes - my pebbles get smaller and smaller and end up almost being grit!

I dunno about you but my pebbles look like what they use on the roads, all sharp and nasty. although ive had a bit of practice lately they are getting better more rounded
