Circular feathers

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Free Motion Quilting a Sampler »

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Home

Style: Romantic, Traditional, Classic

Materials

Cotton fabric, polyester thread and wadding.

What was your inspiration?

Leah Day's Craftsy course.

What are you most proud of?

Getting it finished! Although I found the feathers on Block 9 easy, quilting feathers round in a circle was quite a different kettle of fish! They certainly don't bear close inspection and, if it didn't involve so much work, and if I had some guarantee that they'd come out better next time, I'd either rip the lot out or do a complete new block. However, as Leah reassures us, people may not look at it in great detail (apart from on this website!!!) and notice the ropiness of the quilting, so I'll leave it as it is. I haven't got enough leftover fabric in any case, so I'll have to be satisfied!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Draw the feathers first several times on scrap paper before practising on your practice quilt and don't try this until you've got your head round how the feathers have to lie on the curves - I wish I'd done so!

you are getting the hang of this, quilting thing. I have done the stitch in the ditch of my heart quilt, now the sashing looks all crinkled. might have to do some pulling and sitting on it to flatten it out

Keep going - we're supposed to learn by our mistakes, and that's what I'm doing (I hope)!

Trouble is, my pebbles get smaller and smaller, which makes it quite time-consuming. I shall have to practise doing bigger ones before I embark on any more! Thank you for your kind remark.

And the feathers look awesome. I think you're very brave for trying them. Leah's comment about getting good at ripping is appropriate, that is not what we want to be good at. This is our platform for critiquing, nobody else will know, notice, care, or have any concern whatsoever.

Thank you for the words of comfort! The Craftsy platform is such a super-duper invention - we can all see lots of projects that we'd never see otherwise and we're all learning from each other - and not just learning from the good things, but from our mistakes and other people's as well!
