Instructions

I altered the pattern a bit from the original, as this was an overlay for an ivory wedding dress I upcycled. The sleeves are made to be 3/4, and the neckline was changed into a V that met at the waist. From there, the center front was opened up down the hem and the entire front was finished with bias tape. Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Retro / Vintage, Traditional, Classic

Materials

I used a black embroidered organza that my client found at a local fabric store.

What was your inspiration?

The client I made this for had found a vintage pattern envelope online, and it lead to the recutting of her wedding dress and the create of this overlay. I made a second one too, out of blue chiffon.

What are you most proud of?

The drape of the garment. It lays beautifully!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Be patient when sewing the armhole seam, and also, thread marking is your friend!

Nice drape. Was it cut on the bias or are there gores?

Thanks! The center front is cut on grain, so the rest of the skirt is on the bias. I adjusted the waistline curve to make sure it had this drape.

Absolutely beautiful. What a great way to take a little black dress over the top. Just slip on this overlay.

Thanks, Scheri! She wore it over her wedding dress that I remade into a 1960's style cocktail dress. It was incredible!

Thank you so much crochet4fun! It was really fun to make. The full-length photo I have was too long to put on Craftsy, but you can see a full-length photo on my blog, at http://www.reallyhandmade.com/sewing/a-classic-vintage-overlay/
