Instructions

If you haven't sewn with knits, it would be a good idea to take Meg McElwee's "Sewing with Knits" class. Even thought this isn't one of Meg's patterns I did make this top as part of her class.

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Romantic, Classic

Materials

Stash fabric . . . black velveteen with a sublte sparkle in the fabric.

What was your inspiration?

Seeing all the wonderful projects folks were making after taking Meg McElwee's "Sewing with Knits" class made me want to give knits a try. I had sewn with knits several years ago but hadn't done so for a while. The pattern was inspired by Sarah of Goodbye Valentino . . . she had success with this pattern. Thought I'd give it a try.

What are you most proud of?

That I finally completed a garment with knit fabrics. Last time this was attempted the resulting shirt ended up in the garbage . . . BAD! I took my time, experimented with stitches and found what worked. I do need to find a better way to finish hems. I couldn't locate the tricot tape Meg recommends, so I had to make do with knit interfacing.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Take Meg's class. Also, I'm hoping to actually go through the serger class and learn how to make the most of that machine. I'm sure that will make sewing with knits much easier.
Give it a try.

What is this pattern. I am a flutist and am always looking for something black to wear for gigs. Let me know. I love this pattern and you executed it really well. Congrats.

Very easy Vogue 8669. I made it for performing. We accompanists almost always wear black. I would advise adding bra carriers to this one. Didn't have them the first time I wore it to play in. They made a big difference!

Gorgeous. I'll be you'll get a lot of use out of this, especially performing.

This is pretty, Cheryl. I make a lot of knit tops. I like to use a curvy decorative stitch on the hems. I've never used tape or interfacing and it seems to work fine.

I'll try that on one of my next knit tops. Thanks for the tip.

Very nice top. I use my serger with knits, it is easier. If your serger has a cover hem stitch, that will make it easier to hem . It's a little tricky to thread it, still need to follow instructions. Also the differential feed helps a lot.

Love your top! And I agree Meg's top is great and I hadn't tried sewing with knits before taking it and now I'm addicted... I just finished sewing another knit dress today... mmm I think it's about #5 since I took the class. Knits are so comfortable and for forgiving and there are so many options :)
