It runs a bit large so if you are a 14 pattern size or a 29-30 waist, you will want to take 2-3"" out of the sides or back darts which is what I did or it will hang like a sack. The lining is poly suit lining. Silk would be have been better to line a silk item but I did not have enough so I just used some suit lining. Pay attention to the bottom hem facing. I messed up and it was made too short ...Read full instructions »

This short empire shrug was made of China silk shantung in black. It is lined and much of the work was done by hand. The pattern is Vintage Simplicity 6277 in a 14-16-18. It was easy but time consuming which is what I am finding even with patterns that say "easy". Nothing is easy in my opinion. Maybe a jersey with rolled hems........ maybe.
What was your inspiration?
The need for a shrug for my daughter for a sun dress that I have not finished yet. When I do, I will post it. She lives in OH and the humidity is horrid so I thought she needed a light silk shrug to go over the strapless dress in the evening or for church. It is cute, I think!
What are you most proud of?
All glory to the Lord!
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Well, I stated in the other area that is seemed to run large. I made a 14 but I could have gotten away with a 12. it is big in the hem area on the sides so I took in the darts in the back but that still left it sort of baggy in the back. I will make a 12 from now on. It worked great with the lined shantung and linen would have worked too but not knit or jersey. It wasn't a pattern for that. I always check the fabric suggestions before I cut anything out these days. I have aged into that. I used to use anything I wanted and not mark the pattern or read the directions. Can you imagine the mistakes and ruined fabric? Well guess......lots!
