What advice would you give someone starting this project? Enlarge your photo to at least twice the size to you can see your details clearly. Create your background first. Then work on the subject (the bee) separately, When satisfied with the subject. attach it to the background by free-motion quilting,

That's really amazing. I've tried using thread to paint a quilt and I always end up with the quilt being distorted. Any suggestions to keep that from happening? I really love this!!

Whenever I create a thread painted quilt, I try to keep a balance of quilting throughout the whole quilt. If I'm heavily thread painting major elements, I keep the surrounding areas much less heavily thread painted. For this particular piece, I thread painted the bee, cut it out, then appliqued it onto a fresh sandwiched background. Then quilted the background fabric after attaching the bee
