What materials did you use? My daughter picked out this pattern and fabric from JoAnns. I am making this dress as a birthday gift to her. She wants to wear it to a wedding in June.

What are you most proud of? That I was able to muddle through. I haven't sewn a dress in 20 years and wanted to ease back into it. This project was more like "sink or swim". It only took me 2 days to get to this stage. I still have the lining to insert and the hemming but am taking a couple of days off to work in my garden. I'll post another photo once the dress is finished and my daughter can model.

What advice would you give someone starting this project? Although this dress fits my daughter quite well it is just a little baggy in the back. There is very little waist definition. Fitting a pattern is beyond my skill level right now but I have signed up for the couture dressmaking course here on Craftsy.

I love your daughters choice of fabrics. Will come back to see her in the cute dress. Yes Couture techniques really make a garment just that more perfect but it is very time consuming. I think you will really enjoy the Craftsy online Couture class it opens up a whole new kit of tools, tips and techniques which will improve all your sewing projects. Thanks for sharing the pattern.

Thanks for your encouragement.

Wow! For a 1st time back to sewing a dress you've done a fantastic job. I'm glad you pointed out the 'Couture" term. I'll be sure to look out for that if/when I buy patterns. I've been thinking about getting back to making my own clothing. I'm tall and have always had trouble finding things with the right length (all over). Could you add a couple of simple darts in the back to help get a better fit? Sure looking forward to seeing it on your daughter. I'm sure she'll be a smash at the wedding!

Thanks Jean. I think I'm going to leave well enough alone with the shaping on this. I'd have to alter the lining, as well....and it would be a shame for me to muck it up at this late stage. My daughter likes it just fine as is. In fact she stopped by yesterday and the first words out of her mouth were, "Did you finish my dress?". I'm going to try to finish it up today. Both of my youngest daughters are tall. The bottom of this dress hits her just above the knee. She commented that she likes the length but I informed her it has to have some type of hem. Can't just leave the raw edge. So I'll need to make a very narrow hem. Good thing she tried it on. :-)

My sewing room looks a disaster. Maybe I shouldn't have 14 machines in there?

Hi again- I am so glad you posted pics of your lovely recipient wearing her special dress. It came out just gorgeous! Perhaps by now your sewing room looks better. But anytime you want to lighten your load just give me a call. I'll gladly take one of your wonderful machines!

I ended up switching out my sewing room for a larger room. It's still rather crowded but at least I can move around now. LOL

Wow! It looks gorgeous on her. I would never know you had any trouble with it! I won't buy McCall's patterns ever because of an experience I had like that. I felt like they over-complicated the directions also. Great job sticking with it!

I learned a lot from that project. Mainly that I really could do it if I had to. I had promised the daughter (who believes mom can do anything) so quitting was not an option. ;-)
