Share a little about the materials, processes and techniques used to create this piece. Batik is the process of using wax and dyes to create designs on fabric. Wax is heated in a tool called a tjanting and then passes thru a copper or metal tube on to the fabric. Where the wax is placed, the dye cannot penetrate. I work in layers to create a design. Wax some, Dye some. When the dye touches the fabric, it spreads like water. So the wax creates a border that controls where the dye can go. Salt creates a unique effect as well. When the piece is finished, the wax is removed. I then stretch the silk on foamcore using linen tape. I use only high quality silk fabric and pure beeswax in my work.
