What was your inspiration?

This quilt was made for the New Quilts from an Old Favorite contest run by the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, KY. They select an old favorite block and contestants make quilts in new styles. I used the baskets as flowers in a fantasy garden.

What are you most proud of?

This quilt won 5th place in the contest and will appear in the AQS book published in April with information on all the finalists in the contest. The quilt will be hanging in the museum during Quilt Week in Paducah.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Have fun and grow a garden of your imagination.

I have just seen the other quilts from this contest. What fine company for your quilt! I saw the theme was baskets and better understand your design choices. It looked like a lot of creative freedom was taken with the theme. Is this correct? I imagine the workmanship is perfect. With the theme of Jacob's Ladder this year will there be enteries using ladder's?

I'm sure there will not only be ladders, but all kinds of other things. The creativity is wild in this contest. I always buy the book of the contest finalists even when I don't participate. The quilt only needs to be obviously related to the original block so creative freedom is the name of the game.

This is stunning! I love it. I have mostly done more traditional piecework but find myself drawn more and more to this style of quilting. This is a very inspirational piece. For the 3 largest flowers did you couch the outer loops? What size is it?

This is about 60" x60". The large flowers outer loops are appliqud by machine. they vary from 1/2" to 3/4" wide, are fused and stitched with decorative stitches. the largest has a flat ribbon (the kind you.see sold for knitting) fused to it and a hand embroidery stitch over the top. Thanks!
