Difficulty:

Category: Knitting

Type of item: Clothing

For: Pets

Style: Cute, Traditional, Classic, Preppy

Materials

Four shades of worsted-weight yarn (I used Cascade 220), buckle, US 6 and 7 knitting needles, tapestry needle

What was your inspiration?

I was inspired by the iconic Burberry plaid and determined to figure out a way to chart it and come up with a different design style for my latest dog sweater.

What are you most proud of?

The chart! I used the wonderful free online chartmaker by Tricksy Knitter, and it worked out beautifully. Also, I really like the construction of this one: It starts with the neckpiece and works down from there. The buckle closure is purely for fun, but it really adds to the "trench coat" feel of the sweater. Also, I love that knitted-on I-cord trim around the edges. This is a personal favorite of mine.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

If you are not the queen of colorwork, do those vertical red lines in duplicate stitch, as I did, rather than trying to use so many colors at a time. This is a great way to practice your colorwork without committing to a huge project. And try it on your dog as you knit it -- you can adjust the sizing as you go along. I got my buckles on Etsy, a great source for hard-to-find trims.

I love this sweater along with others. I was trying to purchase them but when I add them to my cart, they show up as totally different project. Has anyone else had this trouble. I was able to down a couple yesterday so don't know what's going on

Love the look really different. Don't know if my skills are up to this level yet. I admitt I'm a slow knitter. If my dog just would be content with sitting with me so I could knitt more. Maybe if I tell her it's for her she'll be satisfied to just lay beside me & not want to be petted all the time. Ya, she's spoiled!

What a classy outfit for your little cutie-pie! It gives me an idea for my grand-doggies, Olive and Wyatt, for next Christmas!

How hard would it be to adjust this pattern to fit a small pitbull?

You can add to the length as much as you want by simply repeating the chart till you get the length you want. The neckpiece can be as long as you want also. As for the girth of the sweater, I think an easy way to make it larger would be to knit a couple of plain tan bands to go on the sides, then sew them to your front and back pieces after you've done the I-cord trim.
