What was your inspiration?
Women! I wanted to honor women and their achievements. This hat is part of a collection of 6 hats that I titled "Liberation" (also available as an e-book). I decided to focus on women who were born or lived between 1920s-1940s.
Ms. Walker graciously chose the style she'd like to be her namesake from my sketches and allowed me the great honor of naming this design after her. She's a remarkable knitter, writer and feminist. She has written several invaluable knitting books, as well as several papers and books on feminism and spirituality. Ms. Walker is definitely an inspiration and needed to be part of my collection.
What are you most proud of?
I loved the way that the ruching (shirring) turned out. It's a tie-in element in all the hats in the collection.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
The hat is worked flat and fairly easy. The most important part of this project is making sure that you execute your finishing skills well. It really makes all the difference.
