Banded Bucket Hat

Instructions

Crown measures 6” after Rnd 13 to fit an 18.7” head. Hat size at band 20”.

I went with a ready made cotton braid for the hat band.

The crown and brim were done using the G hook, the hat sides were done with the H hook. I also skipped Rnd 20.

What was your inspiration?

A little boy's first birthday.

What are you most proud of?

That it looks "finished". I blocked both the crown piece and the brim by using a damp cloth and my steam iron.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

This is a child's pattern, but I sized it up for an adult if anyone is interested.

You can use a size H hook for the whole hat. I have crocheted a lot of these hats for adults and have achieved a perfect hat.

If you click the link that takes you to the pattern, then scroll to the reviews at the bottom, you will see how some have modified the pattern for adult sizes. Someone mentions which hook to use. Take a few minutes to read through them and hopefully you'll find a solution.

I made this hat and surprisingly, even though it's for a child, it fit all the adults I tried it on. Maybe it was the yarn I used -- an alpaca wool blend. Anyway, I love it, giving it as a Christmas present and two more people want one. I put embellishments on the band, i.e. a broach or buttons. Can be dressed up or dressed down and looks great on the ladies! Kudos to you for the pattern!!!

Size will always be dependent on yarn, hook size and individual tension. Great that the regular size worked for you with no modifications.
