Baby shower cake

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Modern Buttercream »

Instructions

I found a small vase at a craft store and filled it with a small piece of orange feather boa to use as the divider. I wanted to incorporate the orange from the color theme but I also wanted the top cake to be suspended high enough that the dangling heart showed up!

Difficulty:

Category: Cake Decorating

Type of item: Food

For: Infant/Baby

Style: Whimsical, Cute

Materials

white cake, buttercream, fondant flowers and hearts,

What was your inspiration?

The baby shower was for cousins with due dates about the same time one having a boy and one a girl. The decorations needed to be more gender neutral so I wanted the cake to have more of a "girlie" theme. The baby on top is fondant using a silicone mold.

What are you most proud of?

I think the dangling hearts are what I liked most. I cut them out of pink fondant days ahead nad once dry I airbrushed them so they shined. Once attached to the sparkling ribbon they looked amazing. Both Moms-to-be loved their cakes. It's a nice feeling to know you helped make a special day a little more special.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Make the flowers, hearts, and butter flies a few days ahead of time so they maintain their shapes. I learned the hard way that when using a silicone mold if once it's filled you can put it in the freezer for a short time and t it will release much easier and not stretch out of shape.

This is a great cake that can fit in with any color scheme,
