What was your inspiration?
A close friend's Marine son was serving in Afghanistan and his wife was expecting their son while he was deployed. I studied photos and pictures of the dress blues jacket and hat and created this (almost seamless) design in the Marine colors. The buttons have the American eagle on them. This is strictly a newborn (possibly up to 2 months) design because of all the buttons! The red knit piping adds to the "authentic" look of the dress blues on the shoulders, sleeves and completely around the sweater. The hat is black and white, which are the colors of the dress blues hat to emulate the authentic look.
What are you most proud of?
It took several tries, but I was thrilled to be able to create an almost seamless top down sweater design in very soft sport yarn. Knitpicks.com offers the colors needed - Planetarium, Serrano, White and Black, or check your local craft or yarn shop for soft baby sport yarns.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
This is not a difficult project. It uses only garter stitch. It uses circular needles, but it is knit front and back because it is a cardigan, which allows the knitter to see it taking shape. The sleeves are knit right in as flat shapes and then seamed under the arms (the only seams).
