What was your inspiration?

I had remembered a baby shower about two hours before I had to be there! No time for a blanket, but plenty time for some simple booties! I do mean simple! Too simple to give by themselves!

I always have these "take out" boxes on hand at Christmas time. There you go... Instant gift! I hand wrote a little fortune...."good things come in small packages"! Not very original, but it worked! The mommy loved them and that's all that matters!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

This is a free pattern to all you Craftsy knitters! If you have never tried to knit, jump in with this simple pattern!

Print out the fortunes, cut them into little slices and put a different one in each bootie!

If you would like my Classic Cabled Cowl Tutorial, you can find it under the Workshops button at the top of the page!

You can knit the pattern in a single piece. Once you knit the sole, you just add on stitches to both sides of your work (that means first you will add stitches to the right of your work, purl those stitches, purl the stitches of the sole and then add stitches to the left hand of your work). You will basically start to make the top part of a T. That's how I made mine. Easy as pie, especially with the use of you tube videos on how to cast on stitches to add to your work!

Thanks so much for your addition of knitting these in one piece! I'm sure it will be of great help to many.

I am so confused. I knit the largest size and need more description on how to fold and attach to itself... how many layers are there!?

You will be sewing through 3 layers....two top and the sole. I hope this helps.

I'm confused about the sole pattern. Do you knit the first 4 rows once with the 2 rows od decreases and then complete 4 (8,12,16) additional rows with no decreases? What is the final stitch count?

These are ADORABLE! I don't knit (still teaching myself!) but I love to crochet - do you have a similar version in crochet? :D

Feb 17, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
Tracy, I don't, but you could easily crochet them! I think they are 2" wide and then follow the knitted directions for length!

So, when I sew on the bottom, the toe are is 3 layers thick? Your picture doesn't look that bulky. Am I correct in putting the pieces together?
Sheila Zachariae on craftsy.com
Feb 10, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
That is correct! I just stitch one part of each stitch together so it's not so bulky, if that makes sense! Meaning one purl, not two, of each layer. I hope this helps!

in the "finished sizes", you show four - but all the instructions that follow list only three ... which size was omitted? (without a gauge, it's impossible to calculate)

Very easy to knit but very bulky when sewn together. (A bit to confusing to sew sole to top based on the patterns recommendations)

What a cute project! I've only been knitting a few months-I learned on you tube-no formal training-so please forgive the ignorant question I'm about to pose... What do you mean by "turn cast on edge a half turn" ?? Maybe I would understand if I had the knit piece in front of me.. But if you could post a pic or point me in the right direction I would be so grateful! I know of a couple new munchkins arriving soon and this looks like the perfect baby shower gift. Thanks for posting such an easy and cute project!

Jan 15, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
Thanks for the note! You need to "turn" the cast on edge to form the top of the bootie so the foot can slip into it! Like a cris-cross and sew the cast on edge to the bound off edge! When you knit it up, you will see what I mean! I hope this helps! Let me know how you come out!

Or, if you were handy with a crochet hook, you could add a row around the top to serve the same purpose, after they were knit up. This has the advantage of holding the tops together, too.

These are really cute! I wonder what it would look like if you added a few stitches and made buttonholes along the top edge, and ran an elastic ribbon through them? I know my babies always kicked off booties, so anything to keep them on would be a plus, and it would only add about three stitches per row.

Okay, I'm trying it now. I knit 2" straight, then k1, yo, k to end. Next row I knit straight. Next row, K1, YO, k2tog, k to end. Continue these two rows until you're 2 inches from the end, then k2tog without the YO to go back to ten stitches for the last two inches. I'll let you know how it turns out!
